Right. Now that is settled, are we ready to move on then to what you mean by "balance"?
I mean on the one hand the ability of any poster while they rant & rave as we all do from time to time, to keep in mind that the views we express are only our take on the reality and do not represent the only legitimate point of view that could be honestly held. And on the other to keep in mind that all news reported from all sources has an agenda behind it and should not be held up as proof positive of anything.

The second point I agree with very much, and I think the two different articles published yesterday in different newspapers were very good examples of this.
The first point might be better discussed in the philosophy forum. It comes down to whether we believe there is a material reality we are doing our best to grasp, or whether we go with Bishop Berkeley

In other news... Goodbody Stockbrokers today report that the Irish economy will contract by 6% this year and at least 2.5% next year making Ireland's the worst recession of any developed country since Finland in the early 1990s.

Why did you post that here, johnfás? Can we not stop raining on tony's parade?
The only think that might stop it from being off-topic is the Good in Goodbody's.

If this is good news I would hate to read the bad news section.
Spring has arrived. The spring flowers are shooting forth, there is bread on the table.

My neighbour just had her first child - a healthy baby boy. The leak from my washing machine is fixed.

Well Johno, Goodbody's obviously didn't read the report on Japan's actual results for the last Q in '08, down almost 4% as a result of their economy's reliance on the car industry. Were this to continue for the rest of the year and we have no reason to believe otherwise, Japan will be facing a 16% contraction, leaving Ireland in the halfpenny place, as befits us in the arse end of nowhere. Are we happy about this? would it improve our lot to know we were not the worst? no, not a bit of it, but lets rejoice while we can in being (possibly) the country with the worst outlook as projected by Goodbodys.
CF congrats to your neighbour on the washing machine & use Calgon tabs on the child and he'll last forever.

There once was a man who said, “God Must think it exceedingly odd If He finds that this tree Continues to be When there’s no one about in the quad.”
The Answer:
“Dear Sir: Your astonishment’s odd: I am always about in the quad And that’s why the tree Will continue to be, Since observed by,
Yours faithfully, God.”
So maybe all the stocks and bonds and shares and jobs are there after all?

Here’s another one for you Johno, more reasons to be cheerful.
From RTE. “It has been confirmed that British and French nuclear submarines collided in the Atlantic Ocean earlier this month. Britain's HMS Vanguard and France's Le Triomphant were both damaged in the crash in the early hours of 4 February, but there were no reports of damage to the nuclear parts.”
We may be headed for a 6% loss but at least we’re not afraid to look were we’re going.

Another one, tonys: a US "communications / telecoms satellite" crashed crashed into a Russian Satellite over Siberia two days ago, and telephone services were barely interrupted at all.
Quote :
Minimal impact’ on Iridium service Iridium Holdings LLC has a system of 65 active satellites which relay calls from portable phones that are about twice the size of a regular mobile phone. It has more than 300,000 subscribers. The U.S. Department of Defense is one of its largest customers.
In a statement, Iridium said the collision would have "minimal impact" on service.
"This satellite loss may result in very limited service disruption in the form of brief, occasional outages," the statement said. "Iridium expects to implement a network solution by Friday."

Heres a suggestion, the Government could instruct local Authorities to organise a recession party in every major town for every quarter that we record negative growth. That would put a smile on every bodies face. Think of it as the Titanic spirit, we go down smiling, it might even be a good networking opportunity for business.

I agree with you on this except they shouldn't be called, "recession parties". They're much better titled as, "recession sessions"!

I got my first payment for a half dozen eggs yesterday. We are going to save up the egg money for a hen party.
