| You can't - simple as.
Only thing you can do is reduce VAT here. I think there are limits on the amount of alcohol you can bring with you so I suppose they could strictly enforce that which might put people off going.
There is nothing you can do to stop people doing their shopping. |

Do we hell. What did John say? The woman speaking now is making the good point that out VAT is third highest in Europe and internet shopping is ready and available. We just bought an eco-kettle (thanks for the tip, johnfas) on line because it was half the cost of driving to Wicklow for it |

| Even if our VAT was the same there would be alot of people going North, there are alot of variables at work in the North: lower cost of premises, salaries, exchange rate fluctuations, the fact that we're ripped off etc.
I have a penchant for Cadbury's Fudge Bars... they cost about 50 cent each here and about 12 p in the UK. |

| cactus That's what the indo said today about it - Quote :
Environment Minister John Gormley says the Government will have to look at ways of stemming the flow of shoppers from the Republic to the North.
Mr Gormley was speaking amid speculation that the British Government is set to cut VAT rates by 2.5 percentage points as part of an economic stimulus package.
The move could exacerbate the existing price differences that are prompting many consumers from the Republic to travel north of the border when shopping.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin today, the minister said it was important for Ireland the UK to ensure their actions are "in sync" to ensure neither gains a competitive advantage. http://www.independent.ie/breaking-news/national-news/politics/govt-will-have-to-stem-flow-of-shoppers-across-border-1551373.htmljohnfás Fudge bars 12p ? What I'd gain on the swings I'd lose on the heart condition / diabetes etc. |

| Yup, they have the price printed on the packaging in the UK so they can't profiteer on them. I stock up everytime I am in the UK. Didn't get many this weekend but I am going up North in the next few weeks to visit some friends so will then. |

| Anyone know who's on it tonight ? Only an hour to wait. Yippee. We could have an hour of scanning through the best of today's Dáil debates if anyone wants to fill in the hour with something that'll make time fly. |

| Or maybe the Seanad proceedings ? People don't seem to be interested in the most recent Dáil debates now, there must be a football match on or something .. |

Pigs, Lisbon, and the banks. Thanks Toxic. I went over to p.ie to see if there was a thread on it but got stuck into the Dot one about p.ie going to the dogs again. jmcc posted an interesting link on the lifetimes of lists - must read it sometime. Do you not miss reading through the Tribunal transcripts now and settle for the Oireachtas ones, hoping for some excitement ? |

| The longer we put Lisbon off and the more we shoot down Ganley in the meantime, the more that anti-Lisbon fatigue that will set in. People will capitulate and vote Yes - we'll be too tired of economic disasters not to. |

That was an unbelievably good show there tonight, wasn’t it. How about this; We cook up a problem with some important industry, a real pig of a problem, the EU take a very reasonable view where they might not, they allow this industry to continue to trade with the rest of Europe, where they could ban it and not only that but they dig deep and help to rescue our problem industry, whatever industry that might be you understand and then along with some reassurances we are asked to vote again. Too far fetched?, yeah, you’re probably right. |
