Cheers evercloserunion, have a brilliant trip.
Kate P, I hope the weekend was better for the harvesting and that all is safely gathered in ? Indeed - enjoy the hols, evercloserunion. Husband is working very late the last couple of nights. In our fleeting conversations as we flit past each other I've discovered that the combination of sun and wind has been good for the last few days - last night he cut some on pretty wet ground on an outfarm (because his father wasn't there to stop him!) and hopes to have finished there this morning. Then it's back to the sodden home ground... I'm not hopeful of that, it's very soggy here; as you've seen from the pics elsewhere, we live in an area that likes the wet! We've over two thirds cut, but that's not really enough, though it's better than many have managed so far and in that context it's hard to complain. He went to a neighbour yesterday morning to borrow a machine and found him in the yard at 7.30am feeding cattle - that's a very bad sign. I know that over the years people complain about the way farmers have traditionally whinged about the weather, but this is going to have a very negative impact on all of us - there will be a shortage of barley and other grains, there will be a huge shortage of feed - it's unheard of to be feeding cattle indoors before mid November, really, there will be a knock on effect on the economy - in which agriculture plays a very large part. There will be less money moving around; those who are building on-farm may not be able to continue in the short or long term and that is an area that is currently taking up some of the slack that's in the building industry. Thanks for asking, though CF! |

Sure I just call it Kingstown.

I dunno, I love the way Ken Hammond or someone else like him eloquently pronounces Doooon Leeurrahh! It's not right but nice in an anachronistic way. |

| Speaking as a relatively near-native of Portlaoise, I have to admit that I'd use both pronunciations, utterly randomly. |

| Ten acres left to cut in ground that can't be travelled and the rain has been pelting down since last night. Seriously, is this the flavour of summers to come? Christening party barbecue will go ahead here on Sunday regardless of rain - borrowing a big gazebo thing to cook under (because barbecue doesn't need the kind of preparation other meals need in advance and is wonderfully sociable). Also planning on digging a pit to cook a suckling piggy in. Slow food... If anyone has any experience of cooking in a pit, I'd be glad of your expertise and advice. Mmmm pork. |

Is it the softness of the ground that's the main problem, or the wetness of the crop, or both? For the pig cookin, maybe Riadach could advise on a fuladht fia? |

For the pig cookin, maybe Riadach could advise on a fuladht fia? It would solve the open air problem, though you still need a fire to heat the stones in. |

| Regardless of where you are, you can never rely on the weather. The summer we had here was pleasant in comparison to all the reports I have seen about summer in ireland this year. A few more rainy days than usual but generally sunny and 25 degrees was what we could expect. Now my girlfriend is coming today from Dublin to accompany me to the graduation ceremony tomorrow and the weather will be good. She is staying until Monday and rain, ceaseless and tireless rain, is forecast from Friday morning until Monday afternoon. Typical. Bloody typical. I am so, so pissed off. (Don't say it. "You've no reason to be pissed off! If you were here all summer long, then................") |

Sorry. Mergers and Acquisitions Law. Generally quite boring, but lucrative for those who a)understand it and b)have a high boredom tolerance threshold. (Which rules me out, as neither fully apply) |

(ps do you realise that "mergers" are now not permitted in accounting?) A bit here and there, but mainly contract and IP. How do you mean "Mergers are not permitted in accounting"? |

How do you mean "Mergers are not permitted in accounting"? under ifrs accounting standards (implemented throughout the EU) there is no such thing as "merger" accounting. it has to be defined and accounted for as an acquisition. it was a little controversial as it takes away the fig leaf of "mergers". for example had coopers & lybrand and pricewaterhouse merged under the new rules, it would have been accounted for as pw acquiring c&l. |

| Gosh, it's very sodden here, it's so very, very wet. September looks to be a soaker if the first few days are anything to go by. |

| Overcast and damp in Dublin but not particularly wet. This is the sort of weather which I hate most. I wish it would make up its mind and either deluge - so that I can put on my waterproofs and enjoy the cycle home in the pouring rain - or break and have the sun come out, so I can cycle home in a t-shirt. |
