1917- King George V proclaims that the family name is changed from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor.



1918-RMS Carpathia is sunk by a German submarine in the Irish Sea. The Carpathia was the ship that came to the rescue of the Titanic’s survivors.



1936- The Spanish Civil War began with a military rebellion against the new left-wing government.



Deaths



1935- George William Russell.



2005- Geraldine Fitzgerald, actress, died in New York. She was born in Wicklow in 1913.
