988- It’s Dublin’s birthday apparently. How they figured the foundation of the city down to the day is a mystery. Still the old girl is 1020 years old today.

1917- Eamonn De Valera won the East Clare by-election for Sinn Fein. The seat had become vacant following the death of Willie Redmond in June 1917 at the Battle of Messines Ridge. Redmond had been the sitting MP for the Irish Parliamentary Party since 1892.

1927- Kevin O'Higgins was assassinated by the IRA in Dublin. He had been Free State Minister for Justice since 1922. He was murdered for sanctioning the executions of IRA men during the Civil War for which his father had already been murdered.
