1790- James Bernard, MP for Cork, died. The "Gentleman’s Magazine" reported that “a few months since he married a fortunate girl of tender years, to whose tender embraces, it is feared, he fell a sacrifice”.

When you think about it, that's as good a way to go as any. Laughing


1916- 2nd Royal Irish Rifles spent Sunday, July 9th 1916 attempting to take Ovillers Village on the Somme from the Germans.

1959- Mary Browne from Roscommon became the first Ban Garda.

1965- David O’Hara, Scottish actor was born. His father Patrick is Irish. Dave is most famous as the mad Irishman Steven in Braveheart.

1967- Michael Carruth, was born in Dublin. In 1992 he won an Olympic Gold medal for boxing.
