1690- James II boarded a ship at Duncannon Co. Wexford and fled to France after his defeat by William of Orange.

1798- The United Irishmen were in camp at Croghan where General Needham prepared to attack them.

1904- Thomas Kiely from Ballyneale, Co. Tipperary became the first Irishman to win an Olympic Gold Medal, at the St. Louis Olympics. He won it for the All-Round event- the modern Decathalon. Refusing offers to represent Britain and the US, Kiely stated that he was there to represent Tipperary and Ireland.

1999- Victoria Adams and David Beckham were married at Dublin castle.
