1920- At Newtown Cross, near Ballinure, Co. Tipperary, the IRA ambushed an RIC patrol, killing a Sgt Tobin and wounding Con Brady.
1940- 75 miles west of Donegal, the SS Arandon Star, en route from Liverpool to Newfoundland, was sunk by U-47. She was transporting internees and POWs. 805 people died.
