I've also heard that it's annoying for meat-eaters to have to put round slices of ham onto square slices of bread in sandwiches. Very incompatible altogether.

Really? I find the Tesco Finest variety to be quite creamy and tasty. The Weightwatchers stuff I do agree is quite disgusting. I avoid it like the plague. All that reduced fat makes for a very cutting flavour.

If you make your own (I'm beginning to sound like a broken record here), you can manage it much better. A quarter head of white cabbage which you can finely slice the required amount from, grate in your preferred amount of carrot, spoon in some of your favourite mayonnnaise (and you'll be surprised how little you'll need because the veg is relatively juicy, especially the grated carrots), a smidgen of tomato ketchup if desired and lots of freshly ground black pepper and you'll be eating coleslaw with a spoon as you read your MN Bookclub choice. I leave the cabbage pieces quite long and not too fine so there's a real bite.

It's far healthier than bought stuff, you've more control over the fat content, you can make as you go so there's less waste and the vegetables keep well in the bottom of the fridge - longer than from Monday to Wednesday. And you're not supporting the Supermarket that Dare Not Speak its Irish Profits. It also most importantly, tastes a gazillion times better than anything you can buy. And it's better value. You can grate in some white cheddar too if you like. Or you could use a splash of tabasco instead of the tomato ketchup if that's your thing.

The alternative is to make a Swedish coleslaw and this is really good (they eat it with pizza). Finely slice some white cabbage, put in a colander and dip into a saucepan of boiling water for a minute, no more. Rinse well under cold water. Shred a red pepper and toss the lot in a bag with some white vinegar of your choice - a small amount. You could splash in a tiny amount of olive oil too but go easy on the liquids, you really need very little. Season with freshly ground black pepper and salt and leave in the fridge in the bag for a couple of hours for the flavours to mingle. Really healthy stuff and flavoursome too. You could add slivers of fennel too and mix the lot through salad leaves for a sandwich. Great stuff.

My brother and sister both eat coleslaw on their pizza. And it's the normal coleslaw you buy in Tesco.

I am going to offer two dumbed down versions of Kate P's delicious recipes for people who live on their own and can't cope with proper cooking, or who are drunk.

Hamburgers - take a small fist full of mince meat, roll it more or less into a ball, put it in a frying pan and squash it flattish with something - cook on both sides as much as you like and season to taste. If you have any spare mince roll it in more balls and stick it in the freezer until you need it.

Coleslaw - get a knife, slice a "round" off the side of a white cabbage and pour some of your favourite bottled salad dressing/mayonnaise on it. If you want to go a bit up market, you could chop it up a bit first.

Wash potato and stick it in the microwave. Cut open and add butter salt and pepper when its cooked.

This would not compare with EvM and Kate P's delicious recipes but would be a whole lot nicer and cheaper than any of the shop bought varieties.
