| Simon Bolivar would be proud, they hope. Twelve South American countries have created an economic and political union with its parliament in Bolivia and a rotating presidency. Al Jazeera - South American nations forge union The plan is to make South America a global player, in the same manner as the EU. But there is a very strong emphasis on political matters, and the US in particular. Not surprising with Chavez supplying the bulk of rhetoric. Brazil wants the 'Unasur' to have a distinct defence policy but this has raised split the countries. |

| Gadhafi is promoting a United States of Africa. In the cases of both continents this looks their best chance of not being constantly interfered with and robbed. I wish them the very best of luck. |

| I only found it on Al Jazeera, which can pick up a lot of stuff overlooked by more manstream media. Of course you could also argue that it's not very important. Al Jazeera wasn't very optimistic about it I thought. |

| This is very welcome, it will promote and preserve peace and prosperity in South America.
I hope that leading South American countries like Brazil, Colombia and Peru can instruct others in their success and bring Latin America to the forefront of global innovation.
Latin America has put the worst of its history behind it-inflation and growth are at respective lows and highs across the region-let us hope that they can put the best in front of it. |

| Why is this asurprise The North American Union is being formed with the first agreement having been signed in 2005. There will be a one world overnment up and running and you will still have some saying it is a conspiracy theory. |

Maybe they're afraid of having to put nutritional information labels on the bags of cocaine ? Or include cannabis in their inflation figures ? | |

Well it should. Alvaro Uribe is a great president of Colombia and he and his government have a lot to share with their South American neighbours. |

| According to Wikipedia and someone on politics.ie Columbia is a member of the Union. However they have not entered into the defence agreement due to the dispute with Venezuela and Ecuador over their alleged support for FARC. |

However they have not entered into the defence agreement due to the dispute with Venezuela and Ecuador over their alleged support for FARC. According to the Al Jazeera report: - Quote :
- Colombia had not only opposed joining the council but had turned down the presidency because of its dispute with Venezuela and Ecuador over Farc rebels.
That's not to say they're not part of the union. |

| Seems like a very good idea. Whether or not it works or not is a different thing. Any idea what the US view on this is? |
