17 March 1858: James Stephens founded The Irish Republican Brotherhood in Dublin. On the same day in New York City John O’Mahony founded the Fenians.

17 March 1943: Eamon de Valera made his famous speech on ‘comely maidens…’ He also attended a Ceili held in the Great hall in Dublin Castle that same night. Mr De Valera and members of the Cabinet joined in the dancing.

Cheers! Very Happy

Working on my 'On this Day' list this morning. Started doing this up last year when I was out of work for a couple of months and had time on my hands.

Hopefully I will be able to work it up into a daily shot and if anyone want's to run with it and start a thread rolling all the better.

I wonder if it could have its own sub section within the History Forum?

IMHO we cannot understand what Ireland is today if we don't have a least some grasp of what has gone before we came along.

On this day it is Trappatoni's birthday. Apparently he has been told there is a big parade in honour of his appointment today in Dublin. alien
