i hate to say it but I really don't like Dubai. It's going to look terrible in 10 years.

That said, I did apply for a job with Halliburton out there!

Hand in your notice, cookie. You've only one life and one soul. Make room for the next, new thing by letting go of the old.

But you already know that.

The question is: what's the payoff in staying where you are? (and I don't just mean in your job). Some part of you is being rewarded by this persecution. You might be in a better place when you know what that is.

Meanwhile toss the job.

Would you be looking at positions in Oman, cookiemonster?

If an offer were made I'd be on the first plane over, AT. And sure wasn't there a huge article on the rise of the gulf in the Economist a few weeks ago too. I was tearing the pages. I want some of that!

Yes indeed. I recommend establishing a holding company headquartered in Dubai called Granulated Solutions Oman Holdings Ltd. GSOH Ltd. would specialise in the building materials industry, specifically sand and other raw materials. These products would be retailed across a number of Arabian markets. It's a winner, I just know it!

Selling sand to the Arabs. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I can afford a pay cut but sadly I can't stretch it being a  volunteer.

Nothing on their website about seasonal work. Anybody know of any other places which might provide?

OPW looks for summer guides. Might have already done this though.

You could just sign with a temping agency and see what turns up. It is a good way of trying different kinds of work with no strings.

Or sign on at the social welfare office. What does that bring in a week anyway?

Out of touch, but a woman with two children on the radio said she was getting €220.00 a week. It should be all right for a short stint. Otherwise one ends up spending the last two days of the week in bed.

You can have my job, if you want. Honest, I don't mind.

You might try looking at this site, which has jobs advertised for a variety of organisations in the charity sector, many of which are paid jobs.

Alternatively, the job websites tend to have a section for bizarre, unorthodox jobs; see what a search there shows up. I once thought of applying for a job distributing free condoms in the gay bars in Cork.

You don't have to live there! You just do a Shire, establish a brass-plate operation there, stick some sarky employee in their to "manage" it and live it large in the real headquarters in Oman! International tax tourism, tis brilliant!

Thanks for that site, having a look through it at the moment.

Condoms in gay bars in cork... I have enough trouble convincing people I'm straight as it it!

Hi Cookiemonster,

Is it the specific job or the sector in which you are working that is driving you insane?

If it is the sector then perhaps you could retrain and do something else? You could get a nice enjoyable part-time job and do an MA with the rest of your time (Maybe you already have one?).

Nearly every area of post-graduate study assumes huge added value when the primary degree is finance or business based.

I have to say it's not the company I work for nor the people I work with, It is the industry I work in (insurance) that is killing me.

My plan on leaving college was get a mindless job and do an MA or some other further education part time but then I went with the money and the glory and ended up where I am. The plan now is to go back to basics.

I'd move to start a degree in International Relations.

I'd heavily recommend that. Almost any degree really. I got stuck in the early 90's, and went back to do an MSc in Environmental Resource Management. Good for morale and good for the brain, even if it gave me a lasting strong aversion to certain types of environmentalist.

I have no sympathy for you CM.

You're young, unmarried, footloose and you can fcuk up all you want. Make the most of it.

Before you know it you'll be married with 3 kids and your only hobby will be wandering around B&Q in a fleece that you slept in the night before.

You could always get a copy of Dreamweaver or Frontpage and get into
the web design business. Though you would be competing with almost
every secondary student on their Summer holidays, half of India and a
pile of locals. Smile
