MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing.

Click here to read the article.

Is the caca about to hit the proverbial fan?

There were food riots in Haiti recently as well as in other places around the world. What'll happen if there are food shortages in Ireland?

Traditionally speaking, shortages mean two things: scarcity and price hikes. Food is already pretty expensive in Ireland, as I'm sure everyone who likes to eat is aware.

Where shall we be in another 18 months?

Looking at the US picture, it doesn't bode too well. A financial crisis is very bad, but if food shortages have to be factored into the picture, we in Ireland are in for some very lean times in the very near future. Tightening our belts, like Charlie once advised, doesn't quite seem to offer a solution.

I've always argued, that if an internatioal terrorist organisation wanted to do some real damage to Ireland (and many other countries), that bombings don't cut it. If the supermarkets in Ireland were to shut for a week, there'd be a famine.

Maybe I'm blowing all of this out of proportion and context. It's possible too that our supposed Government are blowing stuff out of proportion too, with their upcoming move to supply each household in the Republic with a little emergency response booklet.

At least we can always eat the booklet!

We seem to be almost a government-free time zone, with virtually no comment or action on the economy, and no acknowledgement of the need for urgent action on food supply.
