16 April 1746: The Battle Culloden was fought in Scotland. This marked the final defeat of ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’

by the British Army and thus to any realistic attempt by the Stuarts to regain the throne. A contingent of Irish soldiers drawn from the Irish Regiments in the service of France fought alongside the Prince and helped to cover his retreat.

16 April 1752 saw the start of the first regular coach service from Dublin to Belfast, the six-horse carriage covered the 100 miles in three days.
