i blame the recession. in the heydays of the celtictiger i remember it was permanently sunny. Dont tell me that - I'll be heading that direction in about 30 minutes ,well D6 actually - I was looking forward to some relief from the cloudy windswept rainy plateau that is Sandyford. I drove 130 miles this afternoon south through the dark lashing rain until I came to the edge of the cloud - the sky here is lemon coloured. |

Today it was cool enough (22 degrees) to go for a post lunch stroll. I had a walk past the half completed tower blocks of appartments which blight the Mediterannean coast, but its all quiet. The immigrant south american or african workers and the mainly spanish-born foremen still havent returned since the summer. Did you see there was a flash flood in the Sahara yesterday? People's houses were flooded up to 3 metres deep. Is it Spain you're in? I've my ticket bought and I'm longing for some sunny winter days, but Aer lingus may be on strike by the looks of it. |

I heard about the floods in the spanish enclaves of Melilla near Algeria but nothing more - which would be par for the course for spanish television. I'm based in a town north of Alicante - amongst the natives - not the Irish/British/Germans etc and I am constantly going back to both Cork and Dublin. The Aer Lingus strike would really mess things up for me. Hopefully you can get over - the weather in October is ideal. After November its nice but not really good enough to go to the beach or anything. |

Going for some Badische Beer. Zum Wohl, EVM! OK, I actually fell asleep instead. But I'm definitely going for beer now. Tschuss. | |

| Better than the previous two. It was European Union Law which I have more of a grasp of because of my background in Politics for my undergraduate degree.
We'll see what the Law Society racket thinks of my paper though. |

| Sure isn't that what makes a good solicitor. All I'm lacking is the ability to bill you to listen to my bullshyte. Some day it'll come . |

is it true you can bill someone for thinking about the case? |

| My experience from the time that I have spent interning in law firms is that they bill you for absolutely everything. They can be very pedantic about it. If a solicitor were using a fountain pen and changed the cartridge he would probable add a fiver for "stationery" on the outlay associated with your account.
If I were dealing with a solicitor from the point of view of a private client I would get them to e-mail me rather than post me anything that didn't need signing and I would phone them rather than they phone me! Would probably cut your bills down by about 100 euro! |

| Today in Town was fabulous. I was going to get the bus home at Westmoreland St but, because the weather was so fine(for once!), I thought I'd go for a ramble around the Fair City. I walked up Eden Quay beyond Liberty Hall, through the IFSC along the National Conference Centre. The NCC is looking amazing - and it isn't even built yet! I then crossed good auld Sean O'Casey's bridge to take a look at Grand Canal Dock. The place around there is also fantastic. The place will be the place to be in Dublin in the next decade. The place is coming on in leaps and bounds. |

| I've heard the Grand Canal Dock area is going to be quite susceptible to flooding assuming a rise in sea levels over the next number of decades. Don't know how accurate that is mind you. |

Ah but if we put in flood barriers we can keep that sort of thing at bay(literally!). The buildings around there are just brilliant, the views across the Dock are great and the public square is a work of art. |

I have the pleasure of working a stone's throw from Grand Canal Dock and have been having my lunch there (weather permitting) for the last week or so. I met a friend of mine today and we had decided on an al fresco lunch. She wanted to sit on the Quays but I suggested we go sit in Grand Canal Dock. She didn't even know it existed. I really like it there. I can also see the National Conference Centre from my office, it's really great. I really like it down there and it will be so much better once the new bridge is built. |

What time did you have lunch at Grand Canal Dock? We could have both been in the same place at the same time as each other unbeknownst! |

I usually lunch around 1.15 to 1.45 (most of which is spent in the queue in Fresh). Also, the excellent thing about the area is that you can drink outside (Ely HQ) and it's too far from the City for the beggars to bother you! |

Yep, you'd also hope that the place will function as a living space rather than a wasteland which Smithfield, admittedly, is. We'd need an actual community of people living around the area to develop. Pubs, restaurants and the theatre will keep the place active throughout the night. |
