| Yeah, I think he should do a good job for him. While I expect Obama to make a few significant bipartisan concessions in terms of staff, I assume a President needs someone like Emanuel in that kind of role (CoS). I wonder will Hillary be offered/take anything? John Kerry is busily talking himself up as the next Secretary of State. |

He seems to building himself up a team of insiders; given the pressures at the moment, there is not much scope for people to work their way into the system. Ms Vargo looks a bit like a but that is probably both unkind and paranoid. |

| I don't think Hillary will get anything. The Democrat all round victory has increased her power within the Senate and I think she can be more useful as a powerful voice within the Senate than any concessionary job within his cabinet. I think both he and her will be happy with this position. She is more likely to get her name put to things in the Senate as she tries to push them through.
I wonder where Samantha Power will feature. |

How was the embassy unaligned? Many Obama supporters there? It was good fun, nothwithstanding a few technical hitches. Informal but interesting - links to various news outlets on screens. McWilliams was in ebullient form. Athough billed to run until 2.30 it sort of faded away at abour 1.30ish - Dan Boyle and Ciaran Cuffe were present but never made it onto the stage for some reason. Hmmm. Righard Waghorne was a hoot - his take on what has happened in Iraq straight out of a Boys Own parody. Most people in the audience were howling for Obama. One guy, claiming to be an Obama supporter nevertheless defended McCain's war hero status. A couple of other amurican citizens were also a little miffed by some of the US teasing that was going on. Tom McGurk was the sole voice of reason on the platform imo - the only person to question the whole sorry pantomime that is the US presidential election. |

The US elections are sorry all right, in some ways, but in some ways more open and participative than ours. What was Tom McGurk's main point? Who was it that said "If democracy worked, they'd ban it"? |

Who was it that said "If democracy worked, they'd ban it"? McGurk was questioning 'brand Obama' and saying quite rightly that we don't actually know what the hell he really stands for. A longish debate ensured during which was discussed the issue of how any US politician can conceivably be elected to the presidency without becoming a brand. The debate was filmed so I'm assuming it's available somewhere - will see if I can find it for emmenners now. |
