Squatters have quite a few legal rights to, even before they gain 'squatters rights' or adverse possession after 12 years (30 years if State Property). In order to sue someone for trespass all you have to do is have better title than they do. Therefore, if you are a squatter and someone else comes onto your turf you can sue them for trespass!! That said, doing it will draw attention to you and probably get yourself kicked out. Interesting concept though.

Agreed. Subject to flooding used to be one of the most common reasons, historically, or else the jobs all moved away.

What I'm talking about here are houses that people wanted to live in, but that are empty for purely financial reasons.

Anyone mind if I split this thread and call the new one something like "should squatting make a come back" - better suggestions welcome?

Alot of these empty houses are half finished though, yes/no?

I think a condition of grant of planning permission should be that you have to finish it and that you have to demonstrate you have sufficient capital to do so.

In theory, a good idea. In fact, developers have to place a bond with local authorities that can be used to finish off roads and services if the developer folds.

Most of the houses are finished at least externally: cheap and easy enought to fit out internally for the young and fit. Electrics would be the item to be wary of. If a builder had to put up a bond for the full cost of house construction, they would have to pay the bank through the nose for that and the cost would be added on to the price of the house.

If the house is half finished just auction it off. End of story. Maybe the squatter will discover capitalism, buy it for a few pound, take a shower, buy a dog to shase off his friends of yesterday and then call the cops to report the riff raff for having drugs on them.

O what a happy tale

Did anyone buy Volkswagen shares recently? I was reading about the whole Porsche/VW/Hedge funds imbroglio in the Telegraph today and it sounds insane what was going on there. The price went up by 500% in 2 days as short sellers(I thought they were banned) scrambled a la Dunkirk to cover their positions. They're looking at a €30 billion loss and VW is the most valuable company in the world. Komisch.

I heard that the price was going up. What was the cause of the whole thing?

Yeah, it started the week at about €200 and finished around €1000. The Telegraph seemed to have a bit of a bias since they made it seem like the German stock exchange was a joke for allowing this situation to develop.
