1914- Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia. Serbia declared war on Germany.
1915- The British landed troops at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli in an effort to break out from the ANZAC area to the south of Suvla. 10th Irish Division took part although they didn't actually go ashore until the 7th.
1958- Australian, Herb Elliott, set a new world record for the mile in Morton Stadium, Dublin. He ran the race in 3 minutes 54.5 seconds.
1998- Michelle Smith was banned for four years by swimming's world governing body, for tampering with a urine sample.

1997- Sgt John Lynch, killed in a helicopter crash near At Tiri, Lebanon. Four Italian Air Crew also died. They were Sgt Daniel Forner, WO Massimo Gatti, Capt Guiseppe Parisi, Capt Antonio Sgro.
