1901- Peter O'Connor set the long jump record at 24' 11 3/4", in Ballsbridge, Dublin. The record would last for 20 years. A native of Ashford, Co.Wicklow, he lived and worked as a solicitor in Waterford City for most of his life.

1914- British ships dredged up and cut the German trans-Atlantic cables to
America

1934- Gay Byrne was born in Dublin.

1979- David Healy, Fulham and Northern Ireland footballer, born in Killyleagh, Co. Down.

Deaths

1888- Philip Sheridan, the son of Irish immigrants from Cavan, died in Nonquit, Massachusetts. He was a General in the US Army who is reputed to have said "The only good Indian is a dead one"
