Riadach excuse the english just this once, but thank you for this lovely thread and for your help for those of us less versed in the language! Most of whatever Irish I have was learnt in National School; in Secondary School we just learnt off reams upon reams of stuff to regurgitate in the Leaving to keep up the grades.

Have really enjoyed this thread and follow at least some of your Irish over a couple of threads. Was always scared Sad to even click on the Irish language threads on p.ie and thus missed whatever was going on the eternal Ayaan Hirsi Ali thread (a book I finally read last week). Shall try to follow the Irish threads on MN.

thanks again Very Happy

Ta maith liom an ceol! Die Musik hoere Ich sehr gern! ... ah don't try and catch me out, I haven't been in the Sibin tonight!! You have an unfair advantage. the strong stuff (and we're obviously not talking bout builder's tea) has always been an invaluable language aid Very Happy

You're more than welcome. I'm happy if this thread, and others, helps people to see Irish as more than just a selection of vocab and grammar, but rather a key to a vast store of cultural, artistic and literary material. You're also welcome to partake in the other threads, chun feabhas a chur ar do chuidse.

It could mean one of two things. Whats the context?

Míle buíochas. Ní mé is fearr leis na ríomhairí ach tá Coinnleach Glas an Fhómhair Cinnte ar Youtube. Tá an t-amhrán Oileán Éadaigh ar albam dár teideal Maigh Seola. Is iontach go deo an píosa ceoil é. Bhailigh Eibhlín Ní Choistealbha é i dTuaisceart na Gaillimhe tuairim is céad bliain ó shoin.

Dála an scéil an píosa ceoil traidisiúnta is fearr a tháinig mé i dteagmháil leis ná "Bod ina sheasamh" más féidir liom an comhrá a tharraing síos (nó suas?). Tá an teideal an píosa ceoil sin thar talamh. Ní hé an t-ainm céanna a bhí i mBéarla air.

An píosa ceoil é nó an amhrán é? Tháinig mise ar píosa ceoil eile a bhfuil an t-ainm 'an phis fhliuch' air. 'The choice wife' a nglaotar ar i mbéarla, is m'anam ní mé an bhfuil an ceart acu, ós rud é nach ansin a luíon mo shaineolas lol.

Why not "Cad is brí le __________"?

Na h-amhráin... Cad mar gheall ar "Mná na hÉireann", go h-áirithe ó Kate Bush -- anseo.

Is píosa ceoil é "Bod ina sheasamh" níl baint dá laghad ag an ainm Béarla leis an leagan Gaeilge. Is maith liom an t-ainm "An Phis Fhliuch". Tá áit in aice le leamhcán i mBaile Átha Cliath dárbh ainm Mullach na Pise agus is mar Peamount atá sé aistrithe cé gurbh ar éigean é sin a bhí i gceist. Tá áit eile Cnoc an Dairt agus is striapach seachas bó a bhí i gceist.
