PostSubject: Bomb Attacks in Spain   Bomb Attacks in Spain EmptyThu Apr 17, 2008 12:06 pm

Just this morning a bomb went off outside the Socialist Party offices in Bilbao, slightly wounding seven policemen. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/7351900.stm
The attacks are being blamed on ETA, who last month murdered a socialist councillor.

It's an ominous beginning for Spain's new parliament, headed by Zapatero and the socialists. Further highlighting Zap's misjudgement in getting into bed with ETA in the first place, it strengthens the hand of the right-wing parties and thus weakens any chance of peace.

This is indeed worrying. Terror attacks appear always ultimately to benefit established powers. I can think of no instance where they have achieved radical change.

Emm, in this case they're weakening established powers in my opinion. Just as the Madrid train bombings fatally weakened the right-wing government a few years ago and achieved radical change (pull out of Iraq, though it probably would have happened anyway). I honestly don't know aht ETA think they're playing at here.

I'm being very contrary with you today CF, please forgive me.

Not at all, 905, a pleasure to be contradicted by you (but not your Avatar)
