Is hidownload free?
It looks like it could be really handy for me.
Looking at the website they do have a free trial thing but is it possible to use it forever for free?
It looks like it can be used for recording RTE's video streams to the hard drive, which is nigh-on impossible

Just saw your post Africandave - you might have answered a question for me..

HiDownload - that sounds like what I've been looking for for Windows. There's a download plug-in for Mozilla that runs in Ubuntu and it gives you the option of downloading any file on a webpage that's downloadable. That audio one sounds nifty. Is there any for burning films as they pass through your grahics card?

Why don't we know much more?

I've visited www.softpedia.com the odd time for a gadget or two and it looks like it has tons of stuff. Some gadgets are neat. I don't know too many other good download sites bar download.com.

You can also use Bullzip for printing to PDF.

Anyone got an alternative to Trueview for opening CAD dwgs?

Atticus, this is the one I used to use, I use Autocad Lite now.

http://www.solidworks.com/pages/products/edrawings/eDrawings.html

You can view and publish .dwg and .dxf but not modify them. It's free.

I downloaded Voloview a long time ago but it was hit and miss. Not sure if it still exists.

If you want to extract a page then just print that single page to PDF.

If you want to cut a page out then eXpert PDF allows you to do it. I expect CutePDF Pro will let you do it too.

I am not sure how the free paret of CutePDF works. If it is like eXpert PDF then you could print the pages up to the the page to be cut and then print the pages after the page to be cut. The two print jobs could then be saved (concatenated) into one PDF document.

If you want to extract text form a PDF that is copy protected then just print to PDF and copy it out from the new document. That was my secret weapon on Tribunal threads on p.ie Smile

I don't understand half of this pdf talk because the document viewer on linux opens everything openly so I'd copy and paste from every sort of document without problems. Download it lads www.ubuntu.com

Defrag
Shrink your disk using Vista Disk Manager (start>>rightclick "Computer">>Manage>>Disk Management)
Delete Extra Space
Reboot Computer and set bios to boot from CD
Stick in ubuntu CD and try
Install on Extra Space which you deleted above if you like it.

Anyone try any of the GPS in your car machines? I'm dying to see how they work and what they do. Is there some kind of contract you need to be in like a mobile phone yoke to get the satellite info?

The pdf stuff.

What i have is a PDF(s) with several sections/chapters each relating to different topics.
In my filing system I group all similar pdf together (eg all review/overview of languages pdf go together).
I then want to subdivide these pdfs into separate folders.

Example. I have a document where chaper one in on german language, chapter 2 is on french language etc. I want to extract the chapters and make a new pdf so I can file then under German, French etc...

Hope that makes sense.

A Sat Nav? I don't think you need a contract, you just buy the unit and off you go. I presume you do need to pay to update the maps though. I think if you were going to invest in a Sat Nav you should wait until alot of the roads projects have been finished because the roads are changing all the time at the moment and the maps you have on your unit won't have.

My girlfriend borrowed one earlier in the year to drive from an airport to a university in a hired car. The Sat Nav was about 5 years old and consequently, it often told her she was driving across fields because the newer road wasn't on the device!

That sounds easy enough:
1. Install free CutePDF Writer.
2. Open the PDF Document in Adobe Reader.
3. Go into the Print dialogue box in Adobe.
4. Select CutePDF as the printer.
5. Select the page range for the pages you want to extract.
6. Print.
7. Go into Cute PDf and save the print job as a PDF Document.

That is how it works with eXpertPDF. I expect CutePDF is the exact same.

--Partitioning tools to permanently install Ubuntu.*

see the guide below. You can create a partition to hold files for both Windows and Ubuntu.
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/partitioning
Quote :
Some Windows users have a program called Partition Magic, but many
Ubuntu users have reported problems with setting up a dual boot after
using Partition Magic. It's better to use one of these partitioning
tools instead (and they're all cost-free). Here are some: QTParted - available on Knoppix live CDs.
GParted - available as the default partitioning program for Ubuntu's Desktop CD.
DiskDrake - available on PCLinuxOS's live/installer CD.
