It would take the excuse they use for the tax out of consideration though. Take taxes on drink and fags. It is criminal that a lad has to pay say 6 euro tax on a pack. Taxing the bollox out of a working man who can ill afford. Everybody would give them up if they could. This theft is justified by saying his health care will be costly. The petrol taxes are justified by saying it is to conserve the environment. What is it with a population that votes for taxes on the basics of life whereas transport, fags and drink account for little of the expenses of a rich man. With all the socialists in Ireland is there none who wants to actually help the working man
Funnilly enough I am a great fan of Co-ops. Ard you are probably urban but Auditor you are rural so why don't you approach 20 of you neighbours and look into a windmill. What have you got to lose. It is an area of great interest to you and who knows where it might lead. Put your elected official on the spot as I saw elsewhere that there is a 70% grant for putting up slatted sheds. Small scale power production. Form a company called Ardanaud Power. I like that name including our 3 handles. We could include others to come up with even a better name

I am, I'm a proud citizen of Dubbalin Town! We city dwellers can use solar power while those in the provinces can use wind. In fact the east of Ireland is to become sunnier as the climate changes in this century, so solar power will become even more viable in the long run.

cookiemonster is another country dweller, so I'm sure he could put a wind-farm on his land. This would mean that he could come on board and we could call it CM Ardanaud Power. Ardanaud, what a good name!

Ardanaud ... just got that now - a very good name. I am living in a town I'm afraid youngdan so I'm not really a country dweller. I imagine I have to travel a lot less than Ard Taoiseach if I want to see the countryside though... but yes if I had a place in the middle of nowhere then I'd be either getting a yoke myself or trying to chip in with the neighbours. There are quite a few windfarms up and going up around Clare (I believe that Moneypoint power station will have turbines located next to it - Moneypoint is some monstrosity on the Shannon but I have a grá to see it whenever I'm going on the shannon ferry). I would certainly vote for anyone who voiced ideas on 'making Clare windependent' or something like that.

Now this algae thing presents a lot less problems than planning permission for a wind farm and pissing of the boring old neighbours who fear they might develop epilepsy from seeing the turbines go round... If I could get myself a half acre in the middle of nowhere and put up an 'agricultural' shed i.e. an oil refinery in the middle of it no one could bat a fecking eyelid as I produced tons of biodiesel from my Frankensteinian algaes back in the wild beyonds of Clare.

And the LPG pipeline is going into Foynes. Under your leadership, Clare could make an opportunistic land grab which would mean that Clare could declare independence as a petro-state!

I heard about this - is this something to do with Tarbert and refining gas there that they steal out of the Kerry undersea basins, the Shell robbing *****?

Is there also talk about Moneypoint getting converted to gas at some stage and didn't the ESB €22 billion spending announcement recently mention a new power station at Moneypoint/Tarbert ??

Too bad you don't own a hill alright but still it is a hell of an idea and you could be an organiser. Introduce yourself to people and later strart a political career. Who else would have 50 unpaid advisers. Depending on who you were talking to you could sound like Ibis, you could be a cheerfull Ard Taoiseach or when you meet an angry voter you could be youngdan.. Any of the ladies for compassion and EVM for a bright high tech future.

That newsweek article is talking about the recent response (a drop) in American consumption to the rise in oil price. Look at these maps showing the sizes of the American states' economies in terms of European and other countries... there could be an international economic contraction because of them which would be little harm as long as they kept activity of a sort up...

Newsweek is interesting - talking about US Swedes and deglobalisation - the language is changing by the minute.

Oil is back above 130 dollars. I sense a bull trap. The price ascent doesn't have sufficient grounding. I'd recommend unwinding oil positions into this current "strength" before the market correction re-asserts itself and oil falls further.

What used Picard say when he used to override an order by one of the others. We are on the verge of a major war and being short oil would not be a good place to be. Remember more bad economic news and oil is still up the most I have ever seen on 2 days.

That would depend on the effectiveness of the Iranian response. The best case scenario would be that after a few days of bombing there would be internal dissent leading to a fragmentation of Iran some of which would be friendly. The Baluck people I think would be one new country. Oil could even go down if it went well. I would not be optimistic.
The other extreme would be if the Sunburn Missile proves it's capabilities and sinks the carriers and other ships. This would also trap the troops in Iraq. All of them would be killed. Then you have Hezbollah and Hamas and who knows what would happen. Such a disastor would make the dollar worthless. So panic early and get it over with.

Not going to panic. The first scenario sounds strangely reminiscent of Iraq...

They could have carved out what could have been a very friendly country in Iraq with the Kurds if they wanted. Time will tell.

This is a very rapid rise in the oil price, I don't think it's justified by the fundamentals, I feel the price will fall fast soon.

While you are thinking your positions would have been sold out for a complete loss if it were a real trade. Lads have been cleaned with this move.

Well, that's it. We have enough members to seize a majority in the Dáil, so Auditor can be Taoiseach, EvotingMachine would be Tánaiste and Minister for Community, Energy and Natural Resources, I would be Minister for Finance, Edo would be Minister for Enterprise and so on...

That is an excellent start to a cabinet. With my tact and diplomacy am I not a natural for ambassador to the Vatican. Otherwise Zimbabee would be OK.

I would start by sacking all of them except the Ranger Wing and intelligence branch. Bring back the LDF from times past. Sell them gas guzzeling transports and put them on bikes.
