The events historical which occurred on this day in Irish history;

1691 - Ginkel offers pardon and security of property to opponents
1700 - MP for Co. Sligo, Captain Hugh Morgan of Lord Dungannon's Regiment, is summoned to appear before a board of general officers at the Curragh of Kildare to answer accusations of being 'a rogue and rascal' and several other complaints. (On 17 July, he is pardoned for failure to turn up - ????!)
1817 - Death of Dublin-born Richard Brinsley Sheridan; playwright, impresario, and politician
1823 - Francis Fowke, engineer and architect, designer of the Royal Albert Hall, London and the National Gallery in Dublin, is born near Belfast
1823 - John Kells Ingram, professor, librarian and writer, is born in Temple Carne, Co. Donegal
1913 - Home Rule bill passes in Commons for the second time

1857- At Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny, Lieutenant Samuel Lawrence of the 32nd Foot. from Ireland was the first person to mount a ladder to examine a house held by the enemy, in order to discover whether or not a mine was being driven from it. His pistol was knocked from his hand by one of the enemy while he was accomplishing this task. Also, on 26 September the Lieutenant charged, with two of his men, in advance of his company, and captured a 9-pounder gun. Sam received a Victoria Cross in due course.

His Scottish cousin, Thomas Cadell, won a VC the previous June 12th at Delhi. Lt Cadell was in the 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers which later became the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

1922- Cathal Brugha died from injuries received when shot by Free State forces in O'Connell Street, Dublin.

No reference to Lt. Lawrence that I can see, in William Dalrymple's wonderful book on the Indian Mutiny The Last Mughal but he quotes Thomas Cadell. With a succession of old duffers in charge of the British Army there, two of them falling to cholera in June / early July, Cadell wrote -

" I don't see how we are ever going to get inside Delhi, under the choice collection of muffs we have at our head".

Wonderful book, fascinating period of history and with much Irish interest, not least the bloodthirsty Gen. John Nicholson from the North.

( P.S. - purely for the sake of accuracy, I'll mention that The Last Mughal concentrates on the Fall of Delhi )

Sheridan: one of his most famous characters is Mrs Malaprop, after whom the word 'malapropism' is named. She features in The Rivals.

"Throughout the play, Mrs. Malaprop uses inappropriate, but like-sounding, words for comic effect. As dramatic characters in English comic plays of this time often had allusive names, it is likely that Sheridan fashioned the name from malapropos "inappropriate"."
