Good news everyone, we are the second-best-placed country in the world to meet the challenges of climate change. Look at this graphic!

Recession, shemession. In a few years the world will be flocking to us to escape the ravages of global warming. They'll give Canada a miss because it's boring!

Jaysus - in that case there'll be shitload of Africans, Muslims,Indian and Asians coming our direction - as the map seems to imply that over 85% of the worlds current population is directly in the firing line.

Gawd - the anti-immigration division over at P.ie will be apopalectic Very Happy

As they already are.

So, the countries that benefited from the industrialisation that created the climate change will not pay the price of it. Instead, it will be the countries who are already in the firing line for famines, plagues, and wars who will be getting it in the neck under the, er, new arrangements. And people think God lacks a sense of humour...

Without having lifted a finger to make it so.

Well there's nothing like living in a country where November happens in July and March as well as November. Will we have 12 months of November by the time the hordes are supposed to be arriving?

This was my first response too on seeing that map; that the countries least responsible for and least able to face the challenges of climate change are the ones which will face the greatest hardship. New World Order or what?

For the life of me I can't see why poor auld Blighty is a rather miserable 12th on the list. Canada, Ireland, the UK, Norway and Denmark are all in the general North Atlantic Area. It's a fairly soft spot amongst ourselves, the Scands and the Canadians. God must be Irish after all!

Well, pace both myself and Kate, the map doesn't actually show how badly countries will be affected, or their responsibility, but their capacity to meet impacts of climate change - not the predicted ones, but any climate change. Ireland, like many of the other northern countries listed, has quite a lot of spare 'environmental room', a good deal of possible sustainable energy sources, plenty of water, etc.

For the sake of completeness, here's the emissions map:

Ireland second-strongest in the face of climate change Co2percap1998p

estimated excess mortality:

impact on agricultural productivity:

Not that any of those detract from the general picture of "it's the rich that gets the pleasure, and the poor that gets the pain".

Thanks for that ibis, although it makes sobering viewing. North America fares pretty well, considering that it's the highest producer of CO2. And Africa's knee-capping is completely out of proportion to the scale of its contribution to CO2 emissions.

While the balance of blame versus suffering lies where I expected it to, more or less, the scenario as you present it here is even more hopeless than I would have expected.

And another map - climate change cooperation:

Ireland second-strongest in the face of climate change Climat10

Based on: how promptly each country ratified the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol; how often it paid its dues to the UNFCCC; whether the country submitted its last emissions report on time; and how much it reduced its emissions between 1990 and 2002, relative to per capita GDP.

Now look at child mortality as it stands in some of those countries and see how grim the future is...

I notice population spread and infrastructure was taken into account. I wonder does this mean they took account of cities that will flood. TBH I suspect it doesn't as the article said it was not dealing with the effects of climate change. Two of the big sufferers from flooding are said to be of Beijing and New York. I suspect that may parts of Ireland could be in trouble as well, including Dublin. This wil surely cost billions whereas countries like Switzerland won't be affected in that way at all. For that reason, I find it hard to believe that an island nation could be the second best prepared for global warming.

Very Happy You said it, ibis! Laois' residents would barely fill Croke Park for goodness sake! Everyone in Ireland needs Dublin.

link to map Ireland second-strongest in the face of climate change Flod60c

According to the nexialinstitute (which I haven't heard of), this is what we face with 60m rise in sea level of which they say...

Quote :

The 60 meter sea level rise set is based upon least expected global ice melt from global warming. This melts 60 % of Greenland (20 M global rise from melt) leaving the core 40 % which has not melted in "recent" geological time as observed in the core samples done by the Russian VOSTOK data set. The larger West Antarctic glacier was also melted 60% (20 M rise) and leaving 40 % of West Antarctic ice. All East Antarctic Ice (which has no residual old ice in any core set - it has all melted in the interglacial warm periods before) amounting to 15 m rise globally was melted. An additional 5 M of melt was taken for N Polar and Permafrost melt off but leaving half un melted.

Does anyone have anything better than this?

Kate's map doesn't look like we're second best placed to deal with climate change. Maybe it was working on the basis of us tearing down all the empty apartments and using the rubble to build a flood defence Very Happy.

I hear the u.s. has started to clear forest in order to plant biofuels. Making things extremely worse in an attempt to make an insiginficant improvement. What pillars of men these are, I'm glad they lead the free world.

Yes we do seem set for a soaking if the 60 metres rise occurs. Denmark looks as if it is about to be completely drowned.

This is a cheery little thread. I'll just add this map that shows the possible extent of the Ice Age that may occur as a result of thermohaline circulation stopping because of global warming impacts.
