May 30 1798: The Irish insurgents occupied Wexford town. The British abandoned the town after the destruction of an artillery column at the Battle of the Three Rocks, which was on its way to reinforce the garrison. While a parley to surrender was underway the troops slipped away retreating to the fortress at Duncannon and the town of Wexford was taken without a fight.
30 May 1844: Daniel O’Connell entered the Richmond Prison, Dublin, to begin his one year sentence for Conspiracy. His conditions in prison were comfortable - he occupied a suite of rooms in the Governor’s house and his visitors could come and go as they pleased. He was released after three months on Appeal to the House of Lords. But his Spirit was broken.
30 May 1944: General Election held in the Irish Free State. Eamon De Valera re-elected as Taoiseach.
