Breakingnews.ie

PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde has said he believes the British Government should talk to al-Qaida in an effort to end the group's campaign of violence.
In an interview with a British newspaper, Mr Orde says he cannot think of any terrorism campaign in history that has ended without negotiation.

He says the experience in the North has convinced him that detecting terrorist plots and making arrests is not enough to defeat al-Qaida.

Has anyone seen this interview? Am I alone in finding this startling?

Why are you startled ? Is it because a copper is suggesting a course of action to the PM ?

And because of the apparent radicalism of the course of action, and its international ramifications. I'd be interested to see if there is any wider reaction from the British Press. I think Obama is recommending the same, isn't he?

Although how they think Al Quaeda can help I'm not sure, they have been run out of most of Iraq by the locals.

Sounds amazingly enlightened and simply logical - they're terrorists for a reason: they want to be involved in talks. Very good news I think.
