New draft legislation that would effectively hide aspects of politicians' financial dealings from public scrutiny is threatening to cause a rift between the Government partners.

The Green Party says it is not enthusiastic about a proposed bill that would allow politicians greater secrecy around the acceptance of gifts and the declaration of shares.

Politicians currently have to declare gifts worth €650 or more and shares worth €13,000 or more, but these figures could increase to €2,000 and €20,000 under the proposed legislation.

Speaking in Dublin today, Green Senator Dan Boyle said his party was in favour of maximum disclosure with the lowest thresholds possible

650 quid isn't much of a pressie these days. Pressie inflation is at an all time high.

Cheekiness! That's a very bad idea. A business has to declare in its accounts every sum, no matter how small - and so should politicians.
