It was a day of some note:
The Burma cyclone killed a much larger number of people than originally estimated - it now looks as though over 100,000 died. The military dictatorship has postponed a constitutional referendum planned for Saturday that was designed to perpetuate its rule.
Following Bertie Ahern's resignation on Tuesday, Brian Cowen was elected Taoiseach and announced his cabinet (covered on a different thread).
The European Commission says it is not pursuing Ireland over discrimination between employees on religious grounds where that is done to maintain "religious ethos" as there are enough safeguards in place since Ireland has made an anti-discrimination directive.
Taxi drivers made a lot of noise in the streets looking for limits on the numbers granted.
