- Maitreya (Sanskrit) or Metteyya (Pāli) is a future Buddha of this world in Buddhist eschatology. In some Buddhist literature, such as the Amitabha Sutra and the Lotus Sutra, he is referred to as Ajita Bodhisattva.
Maitreya is a bodhisattva who in the Buddhist tradition is to appear on Earth, achieve complete enlightenment, and teach the pure dharma. According to scriptures, Maitreya will be a successor of the historic Śākyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The prophecy of the arrival of Maitreya is found in the canonical literature of all Buddhist sects (Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna) and is accepted by most Buddhists as a statement about an actual event that will take place in the distant future. Does eschatology mean what I think it does ? |

| Buddhist eschatology, as subscribed by some Buddhist schools, derives from purported Gautama Buddha's prediction that his teachings would disappear after 500 years. According to the Sutta Pitaka, the "ten moral courses of conduct" will disappear and people will follow the ten amoral concepts of theft, violence, murder, lying, evil speaking, adultery, abusive and idle talk, covetousness and ill will, wanton greed, and perverted lust resulting in skyrocketing poverty and the end of the worldly laws of true dharma, similar to Hindu eschatological predictions. |

| Nobody but myself on this site has ever heard of Matreya which is not surprising. He is supposed to reappear shortly in days under a bright star. Information on him can be gotten by googling Share International. I would not link it because were it true it would be demonic. As amazing at it seems there is a lad on P.ie who believes this and is a devotee. He is Colonel Kurtz and is on the american crisis thread. This guy is one strange cookie if he believes this |

| The emergence of Maitreya was postponed, it is claimed, because the people who had come to see him appear were not of a sufficiently serious nature for the message to be received in a spirit of sincerity.
No laughin' at the back you lads! |
