| Yes, but try getting a loan to open your own practice... or indeed patients who would be prepared to go to a group of 23 year olds who are newly qualified.
We need something half way between internship and full blown professional practice and we need it for young people with all sorts of different qualifications. It doesn't have to be a measure that we want to keep forever but there are plenty of people prepared to stick around earning less in order that we can rebuild this mess and then earn a more decent wage again. Why turn down such an opportunity, the alternative is mass emigration or leaving these people on the dole, wasting away whilst they become both demoralised as well as losing the skills they have spent a number of years developing. |

Twenty three is young, but are they fully qualified? If so, why not get going themselves? I know a couple of people who did. What they need perhaps is mentor ? I suppose again, indemnity insurance isn't cheap. |

| Alot of things come down to insurance at the end of the day. It is something, aside from their being no business, which virtually prohibits any solicitor recently let go from setting up on their own as well. |

There are a lot of vested interests in Irish society that mitigate against people who wish to undercut. Indeed the problem is a lot wider than that one issue and reduces the overall efficiency of the economy.
Also experience does matter in many professions. |

| That is why I am not suggesting people that young set up on their own, it isn't feasible or beneficial... the conversation really came about revolving around physiotherapists and how any hospital is mad not to take them in, at least for a while, when they want to work for free. The same applies to alot of professions though. There are alot of people on the dole right now, intelligent, but with no short term job prospects... the State should be tapping that... even if it is just through homework clubs for disadvantaged areas. |

| It is sad because there is so much work that actually needs to be done. |

| John Hurley, Central Bank governor said unemployment would be 11% this year and would not improve by next year.
Hewlett Packard just announced 500 jobs for Leixlip, meanwhile. |

| This is how you spend some of your Quantitative Easing ... - Quote :
- Fast-track plan to turn jobless into teachers
People who lose their jobs in the recession will be given the chance to become teachers in just six months under a fast-track route to the classroom to be unveiled today.
Teacher-training courses will be cut from a year to six months from September as the Government encourages "high-calibre" people to change profession midway through their career. The scheme will also be open to graduates; many of the 400,000 students who leave university this summer will be looking to the public sector rather than the City or the law.
From next year, some 200 high-flying teachers will be picked out each year for a fast-track promotion under which they could become headteachers within just four years.

Hewlett Packard just announced 500 jobs for Leixlip, meanwhile. With unemployment at 10.4% in February that prediction will be out of date in 2 months. How far behind the curve are the CB? |

| I see a lot more jobs in the papers DE - could it be that there will be a slowdown in the job losses as the summer approaches and tourists start coming in ? Is that what they are expecting?
But at this rate you are right - it will be 11% very soon. Any guesses as to what the March figures will be yet - not a lot of major job losses announced so much lately... |

| Deloitte have announced 70 redundancies, which represents approximately 6% of their workforce. Again, like most professional firms, this will be achieved through the letting go of newly qualified Chartered Accountants (it is the same story in the Solicitor's firms). Deloitte are also cutting salaries by between 5 and 10 percent, are offering career breaks to get people off the premises and are looking for "flexibility in working hours"... which means 4 day weeks. |
