SIPTU's representative on Morning Ireland today did not cover himself in glory. He more or less admitted that the Union had not bothered to lobby Government on the Budget provisions.
IBEQ, the CIF, and every business interest wore a path to the Taoiseach and MoF's door over the last month, in a bright glare of publicity.

Now, the fat cat Nabobs of SIPTU, on payscales comparable to junior Minister's admit that they did nothing, and express surprise that the low paid and middle income earners have been scalped in this budget.

The spokesperson clung to the leaky liferaft of some kind of deal in relation to job security, that in the present climate will be spitting in the wind, to put it politely.

Now they have to go to the membership and look for a vote on the Partnership pay deal. Their only hope was Government's delay of Public Service cuts, clearly held back until after the deal was ratified by the SIPTU membership.

Time for a shakeout in SIPTU?

David Beggs is now saying that people should vote for the pay increase because we're stuck with the budget anyway.

He is now looking to meet the Taoiseach to discuss it.
