PostSubject: HELP - I want to watch the Sunday Game from abroad   HELP - I want to watch the Sunday Game from abroad I_icon_minitimeMon Sep 22, 2008 8:03 pm

Can somebody help me out? I am out of the country and I want to watch the Sunday Game to see the highlights of the All Ireland Football Final

link is on
http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship/mediaplayer.html?programmes_thesundaygame

The way to get around this is to find the raw url from a computer in ireland and then paste that itìnto the browser abroad. Is there anyone out there who will perform this task as a favour to me? I'd really appreciate it.

Sorry Zhou, everyone here tonight seems to be technically challenged. If Audi or EVM turns up I'm sure they will be able to think of something.

This is the address I got from Mozilla plug-in and looks like a realplayer file. It wasn't an .smil file like in the example.

That f2eb etc. is a hex number and it looks like my wifi. Hope this works. You know hex - all the roundy ones are zeros. If it doesn't work I'll try windows and the instructions you gave on the wordpress article.

Technically challenged is certainly a good adjective for my abilities. I am very good on the television remote control but that is about the extent of it Wink.

Cheers guys and A#9 in particular. The weather picked up and I never got a chance to get back to the thread. I will have a look at it tomorrow. It really is a shame that RTE can't disseminate our culture internationally for free. I think they are hoping to set up a TV stations for the Irish who have had to emigrate. Blocking them from what's on the web seems to contradict that policy. Perhaps it is a bandwidth issue.

You're welcome - if it worked.

You're very generous and kind to RTE with the bandwidth excuse - what would they need? Another high speed connection and a couple more modems, a server? There should be rakes of students around who could do with some network work.

Myself I'd say they're afraid of their lives that a loophole in their television licence cashcow will appear ... There are rumours this will be raised in the budget... If it is and a bank is bailed out then hangings should ensue because I for one will refuse to eat cake.

Isn't there already a loophole? Company called Magnet will be broadcasting a number of tv stations for free (ie, if you pay for their internet stuff) and you don't have a tv, then you don't need a tv licence.

Kate I saw that before somewhere but I'm sure I also read on the Government site (sorry I've no link now) that you are obliged to pay for a tv licence if you have equiptment which receives a signal which means a computer too.

Basturds.

I don't think so. IMO streamed video to a PC is not a "television set" under the definition in the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1972.

Here EVM from Citizens Information Bureau - what does the bold below mean?

Quote :
Every household, business or institution in Ireland with a television or equipment capable of receiving a television signal (using an aerial, satellite dish, cable or other means) must have a television licence. A television licence is a certificate that states that you have paid the appropriate fee to the government and contributed to the cost of public service broadcasting in Ireland. Your television licence in Ireland is issued for 1 year, after which it must be renewed again.

Public service broadcasting in Ireland means comprehensive radio and television services that are free to transmit programmes that entertain, educate, inform and cater for all members of the community. These services must also provide news and current affairs programmes, including coverage of proceedings in the Houses of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) and the European Parliament.

Each year, the government provides a grant to RTE (the national broadcasting organisation), which is funded by your television licence fee. RTE has responsibilities to deliver public service programmes in Ireland. The television licence fee is collected by An Post on behalf of the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, who has responsibility for broadcasting policy in Ireland.
Rules

If your household, business or institution possesses a television or equipment capable of receiving a television signal, you are required by law to have a television licence. Even if the television or other equipment is broken and currently unable to receive a signal, it is regarded as capable of being repaired so it can receive a signal and you must hold a licence for it. Failure to produce evidence of a television licence to an inspector can result in a court appearance and on conviction, you can receive a substantial fine. People who have been fined and who have breached court orders directing them to pay their television licence can be imprisoned.

You do not require a television licence to watch television on your computer or mobile phone. However, you do require a licence if the computer is used together with any other apparatus to receive a signal.

A television licence is issued for one year after which it must be renewed again.

If you are aged over 70, you can receive a television licence free of charge. If you are aged over 66 and are receiving a State pension and nobody in your household is employed or receiving Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance, you may be entitled to a free television licence. To find out more about the Household Benefits Package click here.

I would say that is anything capaple of receiving cable TV, Satellite TV or VHF/UHF terrestrial TV. This would also include a PC card for such a purpose.

In their previous statement they said you didn't need a licence if you want to watch tv on your pc. How do you do that without receiving a signal? Only online TV is it?

They have to say that because watching TV online is not enforceable for licensing. The primary function of a PC and DSL box is not to watch TV.
The primary function of a satellite TV receiver IS to watch TV.

If I tape it and beam it out into the internet to you for free or for a present of 50 euros per year is that illegal? My pc card could shovel it out into the DSL line fairly quickly couldn't it?

That would be illegal under copyright legislation I would imagine.
