A New Sort of Cleaning Lady

I see there is a new sort of cleaning lady. These ladies clean the surface of the planet of mines:

Women de-miners in Kosovo

Women de-miners in Croatia

Women de-miners in the Sudan

Women de-miners in Cambodia

Women de-miners in the Lebanon

The women in Kosovo don't have metal detectors.

Well I hope they do a better job at sweeping mines than my cleaning lady does of sweeping the floor. There are more chads in the carpet of my office than there are in a US presidental election count centre!

I think they do do a good job. It is not a job in which you get to make a lot of mistakes.

Nor learn from them when you do.

From what little I know part of the problem with these things is that, like some mines, they may not necessarily contain metal.

Yet another evil waste of money.

Imaging what it would be like if rural Meath was covered with cluster bombs! It would sharpen your views to those that dropped them. What was it 6 people a day in Southern Lebanon injured by these things. Collateral damage, or just pointless slaughter.

I can think of a ranch in Texas or a residence in Pennsylvania Avenue that I would like carpeted just to illustrate how inconvenient they make life and how difficult they are to remove.

Yes cluster bombs are nasty little beasts too. These mines are nasty weapons because as well as taking lives and legs they take people's livelihoods on the land too.
