Interesting biography. Although some of it is new to me, I expect most of this is common knowledge.
In 1974 he was elected Councillor - after hurling for Dublin.
Described by residents as "Pragmatic, insightful and influential". "Big car, driver and a big house in Lucan" "An ideas man"
Some of his land in West Dublin was zoned by Dublin County Council. Lawlor had backed Colley instead of Haughey - Haughey reversed the zoning decision.
Harry McGee claimed that every large housing estate in Dublin in the early 80s and 90s involved corruption of officials. Councillors came in and voted without heariing the debate on planning matters. FG and FF Councillors were working together to overturn planners recommendations,
It emerged that LG in the 70s stepped down from the chairmanship of a sugar company due to conflict of interest.
He was investigated by the Flood Tribunal - The Supreme Court ruled that he did not co-operate with the Tribunal and he was sent to jail twice. After a month in jail e began to cooperate to some extent.
He had a huge Merc. He had no job other than county councillor.
4.7 million had passed through his accounts in various countries from 1983-2000.
October 2005, Lawlor was in Russia on business and died.
So far, no mention of his associations with Ganley in London and Albania.
The programme as usual tried to suggest that he was loved by residents of the area. Maybe in the leafier parts of Lucan, but from the users of the crumbling "Quarryvale Community Centre" shown in the programme I didn't hear a good word about Lawlor or any other politician.
