Strange Dental Experience

For want of a better title! I've just been to a flat in Galway city centre to get my teeth checked out by a Hungarian dentist. I sat down in the sitting room with the other people waiting and had a cup of tea while waiting for my turn. He was able to give me a quote on the spot. It will cost me €50 per tooth to change my filings from poisonous mercury to nicer white stuff and €250 for a complete whitening. They also do an x-ray as a matter of course. The quote includes hotel, food and flights. All in all it will come in at under a grand. They even pick you up from the airport! A couple of friends have already used this service and can vouch for it. All very surreal given the surroundings but very relaxed. Felt very 'open-market'.

Interesting indeed - I believe the Polish system is good too. I think I might need a root canal soon and I'm told that alone could cost half a grand so keep his number will you?

You're going to Hungary so by the sounds of it? I won't mention the film 'Hostel' ..

How much would it cost in Dublin? My dentist in Dublin does an x-ray as a matter of course.

My Dad got a root canal and then two implants put in. Cost him gettin on towards 10 grand.

I got a root canal before. It cost around €700. The guy was so good that I fell asleep. My dentist sent bme to him saying that he had the lowest failure rate in the country. €700 well spent in my book.

At 10 grand for a root canal I don't know which is scarier - that or Hostel (rent it when you come back.. .. from Hungary)

NHS Dentist Charges Structure
£16.20 - This charge includes an examination, diagnosis and preventive care. If necessary, this includes X-rays, scale and polish, and planning for further treatment. Urgent and out-of-hours care also costs £16.20.
£44.60 - This charge includes all necessary treatment covered by the £16.20 charge PLUS additional treatment such as fillings, root canal treatment or extractions.
£198 -This charge includes all necessary treatment covered by the £16.20 and £44.60 charges PLUS more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures or bridges.
These charges are valid for any NHS dental treatments finished after 1st April 2008.

For the period of 1st April 2007 to 1st April 2008 the bands were £15.90, £43.60 and £194 respectively. The charges for work finished before this date were £15.50, £42.40 and £189 respectively for the 3 bands.

£44.60 for a root canal ?? *bites into Catch® bar* I could get a holiday in the lake district, do some shopping in London and visit Blackpool and Shakespear's house for the price of half a root job here.

Yup the National Health Service is wonderful, despite the complaints of people.

Is it possible for anyone to go to the NHS so? If I go there will there be any problems, barriers, impediments?

Its not the Queen you should be blessing, its Aneurin Bevan, a Welsh socialist P.M.. The Queen thought she had better put up with it or the Communists might get in.

Well you should be blessing alot of people. Had it not been for Lloyd George's National Health Insurance Act pre WW1 it never would have come about, equally William Beveridge should be thanked for the Beveridge Report as should Clement Atlee as the Prime Minister under whom the NHS was created. Of course Bevan as well as he was Minister for Health.

Up to 2006, I think you would have got emergency dental treatment if visiting and other types of treatment if you were resident there (even temporarily). It may have changed - cheap flights put that kind of thing under pressure.

The majority of NHS mouth work in the north appears to have been taken over by adolescent Spaniards but fear not, they seem to know what they are doing. The influx is due to the expanding reluctance of local gobmen to treat the filthy masses. These Juans and juanettas may be excellent Clinicians but have little in the way of English and so deprive the patient of the joy of trying to make sense of the usual gibberish muttered through onion flavoued exhalations. (What is Spanish for lower 6 aclooooosial?) Still, the recent Iberian experience was a welcome success following previous disasters, principally a visit to the Albert Clock on the promise of getting one pulled and a root job for twenty quid..oh missus!

Six months ago I paid about €100 to have 3 white fillings, a cleaning and of course an x-ray.

I go to a guy in Claregalway. He's a genius and very good value. Everyone I know that goes to him, raves about him.

Last week he cleaned my teeth again, for €40.

Gee, I clean my teeth myself. Is this unusual? The cost is negligible, even though the non-fluoride toothpaste I use is more expensive than the dangerous supermarket stuff.

Us Celtic Tiger cubs don't lower ourselves to cleaning the foie gras our own teeth.
