We're doing so much better than the last Olympics. Let's hope we continue the upward ascent in the medal count in London 2012!

They're already preparing a batch of olympians for 2012 in the Holy Family club in Belfast. If we can go better than Carruth and Mc Cullough in Barcelona with a couple of golds the boxing clubs will be turning them away.

I hate boxing(particularly pro boxing), but I like boxers and people who train them. They are often coming out of areas with no facilities: didn't we have one guy before who trained in a container?. It is difficult for boxing clubs to get somewhere to train: they can't share space in sports halls as they have to leave the ring up (why a "ring" when its square?) all the time. They seem to have grabbed the opportunity of a bit of boom time funding with both hands and done everything right.

A lot of Traveller men box, and box very well. It is part of the culture that people like to mock. Better to use fists than anything else, anyway.

After the Olympics are over, perhaps the boxers could be asked to run a seminar for other sports, to learn from them how they pulled off such a good development programme with great results.

I'm no expert on boxing but I have attended the National Stadium for the Irish finals and other amatuer bouts. I'd much prefer to watch the amatuer and havn't believed in pro-boxing since I was 9. I would, however, still watch the odd pro-bout if Paul McCloskey is fighting. Derryman and all that even if he's a north Derry sur . The amatuer sport is certainly an artform when performed with style.

Yes, and with the likes of Duddy, Bernard Dunne, Joe Calzaghe, Amir Khan becoming very famous in these isles, I see the discipline become much stronger in these islands before the next Olympics. Ireland and Great Britain are Olympic world-leaders in boxing, if we can put four years of intense investment into the area we can win as much as five gold medals at London 2012.

Boxing, showjumping, rowing, slalom and shotput should be the things we specialise in and if each of these had a high performance unit, we could be turning out medals in all these categories.

I don't want to see "team GB" do well in the boxing at all.....and it's not anglophobia.....our boxers are taking on two of them in a couple of days.

They're our nearest rivals .....so get onside there Ard-T Wink

Oh, I know that and I hope that our lads hammer the lard out of the Sasanaigh salach! I'm just commenting on the fact that, in these islands, there exists the greatest concentration of boxing talent in the world. It seems to be a cultural thing.

I do not want any baubles, Sir. As Nathan Bedford Forrest would have said it's enough to be mentioned in dispatches.

I was just checkin out Darren Sutherland's bebo page and it struck me how he with a Belfastie and a Dub really represent most of the Irish nation's experiences

"Born in Dublin, Ireland to an irish mother and a west indian father. Spent my early life living in Tottenham, London until i was about 8 yrs old.. The family relocated to the island of ST. Vincent in the caribbean (my fathers homeland). Lived in St. Vincent til i was 12 yrs old. Then moved back to Ireland."

and if one of the John Joes had got through we would have had the full house.

Apart from D4..that is...any boxing clubs in Donnybrook johnfás? given the tradition of fighting in the district

riadach, I am a patriot who has not had the advantage of the excellent Irish education you received. I'm not fluent, but I have a fair grasp of Irish. I shall remember in future the points you make. I just might make fluency here on the Machine Nation!

Wouldn't the dream Olympics be if all our three boxers, Denis Lynch and Cragg got gold medals? It's unlikely, but it'd be brilliant for London 2012 since we'd be well set up for a slew of medals to bring back over the Irish Sea.

Yes, it'd be our very own dream team. The cause? My love in God, faith in humanity, the belief in the power of positivism and the happiness an optimistic demeanour creates. It's healthier being optimistic.
