John Bowman kindly reminded us this morning that it is fifty years since Margaret Burke Sheridan died.

I have only heard her recorded voice twice on the radio, and tried to find any cd of her singing last month in Dublin without success.

Like Callas, she was more than a diva, a person of massive artistic integrity, passion and intelligence. A nun-educated orphan from Mayo, she became Puccini's favourite interpreter of Mimi in La Boheme and as Butterfly. She had a dazzling career 'admirable diva' at La Scala, Milan, and was one of the world's very greatest operatic sopranos of all time.

I couldn't find a link to her singing opera, but here she is singing Thomas Moore ( not at all the same, but still splendid to listen to)

and some silent film footage of her, in 1922
