More of a lineage thing, I think. Birds are avian dinosaurs, and the non-avian dinosaur lineages died out.

I'm slightly confused. This is either very simple or very complicated.

However, the crocodiles sailed through unscathed and unchanged.

Well they are significantly reduced in size compared to their ancestry IIRC.

So crocs and birds survived the Mexican Meteorite ? Fair play to them.

Maybe that's why crocs are so chilled out all the time.

Wasn't it dark for 1000 years or something.

It has to have something to do with conserving heat. Mammals are warm blooded, birds are hot blooded. Smaller reptiles are more likely to conserve hit by burying themselves etc, as are crocodilian species. Large cold-blooded dinosaurs (although I believe there are paleontologists, who assert that dinosaurs were hot-blooded), would have tremendous difficulty in preserving body temperature if a cold snap hit.

Should we have an evolution/dinosaurs thread?
