1812- The Battle of Salamanca was fought in Spain, during the Peninsular war. The allied forces of Britain, Spain and Portugal won. The Irish contribution apart from the Commander in Chief, Wellington, was the Inniskilling Dragoons and the 27th (Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers), 83rd (Royal Irish Rifles), 88th and 94th (1st and 2nd Battalions Connaught Rangers) Regiments of Foot.
1817- William Sadler became the first man to fly across the Irish Sea, from Dublin to Anglesey, in a balloon.
1933- The Blueshirts were outlawed. This was a period of instability in Ireland. Fianna Fáil had formed their first government only 18 months previously. Ex soldiers of the Free State Army formed the Army Comrades Association to protect themselves from Fianna Fáil vengeance. Eoin O’Duffy took over leadership of the association in July 1933 after his dismissal as Garda Commissioner in March. Renamed the National Guard, O’Duffy adopted the paraphernalia of European Fascism and planned a march on Dublin which was banned by De Valera. The government feared a coup d’etat was in the offing and De Valera later admitted that he didn’t trust the army not to support O’Duffy. In September the NG, Cumann na nGaedhal and The Centre Party merged to form Fine Gael.
1937- Fianna Fáil formed a government after the election held on 1st July. De Valera was elected President of the Executive Council (we were still the Free State) and Minister for External Affairs. FF won 68 seats, FG 48, Labour 13, Independents 8. The 9th Dáil lasted 351 days. Dan Breen topped the poll in Tipperary with 8,849 first preference votes.
Births
1890- Rose Fitzgerald was born in Boston, the granddaughter of Irish immigrants. In 1914 she married Joseph Kennedy and three years later gave birth to John Fitzgerald Kennedy future President of the USA. She died in 2005.
