1815- Charles Bianconi, opened his first horse-drawn coach service, between Clonmel and Cahir, Co. Tipperary, a distance of 10 miles.

1907- The Irish Crown Jewels vanished from Dublin Castle, never to be found.

1917- Lawrence of Arabia captured the port of Aqaba, in modern Israel, from the Turks. T E Lawrence was the son of Thomas Chapman Baronet of Westmeath. Chapman abandoned his wife and daughters in Ireland and legged it to England with the family governess, Edith Junner. The couple adopted the name Lawrence and had 5 boys together.

1946- Sean MacBride founded Clann na Poblachta. After a short period of success, including a term in a coalition government, the party faded from existence in the late 1960s.
