1798- John Colclough was tried in Wexford town. He was and executed along with Cornelius Grogan and Bagenal Harvey.

1914- Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife, Sofia, were assassinated in Sarajevo, by Gavrilo Princip. The Royal couple had survived an earlier bomb attack by the Serbian Black Hand gang. Returning to their hotel through the city, their driver took a wrong turn and delivered them, purely accidentally, into the path of the assassin.

1920- The Connaught Rangers mutinied in India in protest at the conduct of the British Forces in Ireland.

1922-The Free State Army bombarded the Anti-Treaty IRA in the Four Courts in Dublin.
