PostSubject: Lil help? Find on this page function.   Lil help? Find on this page function. EmptyThu Jul 17, 2008 10:18 pm

Recently I have decided to become more efficient in my research by employing online texts. Pages numbers seem to be inaccurate but other than that it has sped up the process of finding and sifting through and noting accurate versions of the information I need almost 10 fold. However, in a bid to be even more efficient, I have decided to search individual relevant words and topics in extremely long texts that I have neither the inclination nor the desire to read in their entirety. For example, the complete version of the Annals of Inisfallen is online, and I am currently searching the word crech, meaning plunder.

Naturally, this involves the find on this page function. However, I would like to make things easier for myself still. I am now considering the aspects of the word when mutated or declined. So I need to be able to search crech, creach, creich, creiche, creche, gcrech gcreach gcreich gcreiche gcreche, chrech chreach chreich chreiche chreche, crechad, as well as terms like crechsluaiged and mórchrechad.

I was under the impression I could do this by putting *cre*ch* into the find on this page function, however it doesn't seem possible. Am I doing it right? And if so, is there a way to have a more advanced search capability within the 'find on this page' function? Or should I just suck it up and stop being such a lazy bollix?

I think for this type of searching, you might have to import the text into a good text editor (with Regular Expression search) and search it there.

I use Textpad for this kind of thing. I also use it as my default HTML / C editor.

Yep. In word click Edit-Find (or CTRL+F). Then click More.

Select 'Use wildcards' then do your search with * for the wildcard.

I'm doing that, but unfortunately it is returning whole sentences that fit the criteria. Is there a way to ensure it is only one word, i.e. no spaces in between?

Yes.

Use a ? instead of a * for wildcard letters, and it should only return words.

If I had c?rech would it return both chrech and crech though?

CRE*
crech
creach
creich
creiche
creche
crechad

GCRE*
gcrech
gcreach
gcreich
gcreiche
gcreche

CHRE*
chrech
chreach
chreich
chreiche
chreche

So 3 searches should find all those. Let me test it...

In word you can search for <cre or <gcre or <chre.

This will find all words beginning with these eh..... beginnigs. < means start of word.
