Peter Balkenende, Dutch prime minister is saying Netherlands will continue to ratification regardless.

http://www.rte.ie/ie/lisbontreatyblog/entry/netherlands_to_continue_ratification

Barroso quoted on RTE just now saying that Brian Cowen has told him that this result does not mean that the Treaty is dead.

How are they going to get around it, if that is what they are planning to do?

I was just thinking about Cowen, as in, where is he ?

I have no idea what Cowen is thinking, apart from having another shot at it next year.

There will have to be official Brusselspeak release on this soon - anyone know where who when? Is it Barroso who will make the announcements about it?

They don't know what they're thinking themselves. Their media contributions are worse than before the poll.

Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore has said the Lisbon Treaty is dead and cannot now be ratified. He said there has been a definite decision by the Irish people and that must be respected. He said there cannot be a two-speed Europe. He said Ireland has very much been a part of Europe and wants to continue to be part of it.

Any other Irish politician want to step up and say the same?

That is all that can be said, cf. Regardless of what has been suggested in the lead up to the vote, the EU and the Irish government cannot with any credibility propose anything else.

Kudos to Gilmore for getting in first.

I think it would be pretty self important of Ireland to turn around and immediately tell the rest of the EU to halt all their legislative work and that all bets are off until we say so. Ireland at least has to examine the reasons for the Treaty's defeat.

Next week, the Irish Government is going to have to offer explanations to Barroso as to why the Treaty was rejected.

What is Brian going to say? What excuses are they going to come up with? Are the fuckers even going to ask us?

The countries which have ratified already in red, the countries which have rejected in shaded red and those yet to ratify in white
The Ratification process should continue, says Barroso

IN Hungary the Treaty was ratified despite the fact that it had not even been translated into their own language.

The Czech PM has refused even to consider it until they have a czech translation. It's very likely that he will now refuse to have anything further to do with it.

I'm worried about your speculations CF! Perhaps we will all be conscripted into a European Army as punishment for our insubordiantion Smile Smile

Yes SeathrúnCeitinn - but it would be good to line them up in front of us to do the job they are elected for.

Is this the same Barbozo who some were telling us a day ago whold allow any state to leave the EU no problemo. Ireland had a narrow escape so have a good look at these fascists who care nothing for what ye think. That Pudgy Porker Cowen knows that he will not be rewarded like Blair and is probably crying because he will be recognised as the Quisling he is. He is a bigger disgrace than I thought last year when he ruined the economy and he needs an updated version of the apt name I gave him then.

Cowen - "no quick fix", "uncertain territory, unchartered waters", "affects other people in Europe and we have to discuss it with them", "must repect the decision of the people", "a good turn-out", "extraneous issues were brought up but that is part of democracy", "orchestrated effort on No side to confuse but that is yesterday and the people have spoken", "will reflect faithfully [to Council of ministers] the issues that arose", "have spoken on the phone to a number of colleagues...Preisdent of slovenia, President of the EU... Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel, Gordon Brown", issues to be addressed are "a myriad of issues and not all of them founded in the treaty itself", will "assess the issues and whether or not they are germane to the treaty provisions".

I think it will take a lot of assessment. There are a lot of reasons and some of them, while not part of the Treaty, are relevant to the European project.

Ivan Yates - "the work of the 'No' is now the mess that the 'Yes' must clean up"

I cant quite follow who said what in your post Zhou but if this last remark is a response to the referendum result, I'm alarmed by its possible implications. Does it mean to imply that although the Irish have voted No there are reasons why they could interpret our No as sort of invalid and press ahead anyway?

Outrageous:

Quote :
It remains unclear exactly what course the EU and Ireland will follow, but the ratification process in other countries looks set to continue.

The ratification of the Lisbon Treaty 'must continue' in other member states despite Ireland's rejection in a referendum, European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso has stressed.
'The ratification process is made up of 27 national processes, 18 member states have already approved the treaty, and the European Commission believes that the remaining ratifications should continue to take their course,' Mr Barroso told journalists.

Aragon the Indymedia piece is written by Anthony Coughlan - does he or anyone know where it is written down that this Treaty must be unanimously ratified/passed ? Was it on the Nice Treaty or somewhere?

The Lisbon Treaty is dead. During the campaign I noticed a
huge rise in nationalism in Ireland and a lot of little islander comments i.e.
the EU needs us more than we need them etc. I felt the people celebrating in
Dublin Castle were dancing on the grave of the Celtic tiger and happily hoping
the country was regressing to a more insular time. This is the road that Sinn
Fein are trying to lead us down with their lies and I feel the country will
suffer consequences. We are not the center of the world and if we want
to retreat into our shells that’s our issue, it shouldn’t and won’t stop the
other 26 countries from ploughing ahead with reforms without us. The idea that
490 million people will stop trying to improve the EU because most Irish people
couldn’t be arsed trying to understand the treaty is silly.

To be honest with you, if they proceed with Lisbon in the face of the vote, I would consider it an illegal coup.
