Quote :
The US Marine Corps is expelling one soldier and disciplining another for their roles in a video showing a lance corporal throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq. The 17-second video posted on YouTube drew furious condemnation from animal rights groups when it came to light in March. The clip shows two marines joking before one hurls the puppy into a rocky gully. A yelping sound is heard as it flips through the air.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii said today that Lance Cpl David Motari received unspecified “non-judicial punishment” and “is being processed for separation” from the Marine Corps. The second marine, Sgt Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion also received unspecified “non-judicial” punishment.

The puppy killers have been dealt with, so now they only need to deal with the child and adult civilian killers and torturers?

The adult/children victims don't count. It's how we treat defenceless animals that Bertrand Russell is judging us by.

Bertrand Russell was a mathematician. Perhaps he would have thought it worth keeping count of the number of civilians who have died in Iraq.

About time these monsters were brought to book. The sort of soldier who thinks nothing of flinging a dog into the air would think nothing of throwing a grenade into a home. The same moral bankruptcy would be present. These people also display stupidity for having the foolish notion of posting their objectionable behaviour on the very public World Wide Web. The armed forces of the world should weed this sort out with all force possible.

Now hold on, that's nonsense. I know people who have done much worse to animals than what happened to the puppy; I have known people who have drowned a sack of pups. I very much doubt these people were capable of throwing a sack of chidren into a river though. The soldiers killed an animal, in a rather horrible manner. That is simply not the same as killing a person.

This topic has litle to do with Europe that I can see so I've shifted it to world affairs.

This sorry business sparked off a big discussion in the US.
People who didn't give a damn about hundreds of thousands of people killed in Iraq ( and not even counted ) were very upset about the puppy. Perhaps in fairness to them it was not just the puppy but the in your face visibility and shamelessness of it.

Other people were upset about the people and not the puppy and still others about both.

I suppose that we should be reassured that in the main people were upset about one, the other or both.

I used to throw pups into the river all the time, how else are you going to get rid of them. Costs money to shoot grown dogs but when they are killing sheep it is a necessary expense. When a sheep is killed you put poison on the carcase. This is painfull and the dog will run home. This is great as you can drive by just in time to see Fido shaking with his legs up in the air as he says his final Bow Wow. The neighbour will have told that their pet would never bother sheep so you give him a big thumbs up the next time you see him. When your own dog is in heat the best form of contraception for the visiting romeos is the scuba diving lesson. This can be tricky because dogs are not stupid and can bite so a good crack of a crowbar will do the trick.
Foxes, cats and rats can be shot but a good terrier can do the job as well. Not every terrier can kill a cat because he needs to be quick about it or the cat will scratch out his eyes. A rabbit will just die of fright if he sees a ferret. I do not like ferrets as they are dangerous to kids so the last one I had I just wrung it's neck. Badgers are dangerous animals and should not be approached but shot. If you have no gun your only hope is to stick him with a 2 pronged hayfork so that you can hold him away. If a badger bites your leg you are in trouble and some people in the old days tied sticks to their shins so the badger would think they had cracked a bone.

Think of all the carbon dioxide I prevented. I deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Too bad it is illegal to hunt polar bears because their population is the highest ever and they are a dangerous nuisance. Like a giant white badger. A machine gun is needed for these pests. There used to be 5000 of these varmints and now there are 30000. http://www.courant.com/news/opinion/editorials/hc-digedlets0609.art1jun09,0,2346947.story

dan I don't know whether I'll have to move some of your posts to 'Humour' or 'Nature' Smile

Two things about treating animals 'badly':

low-tech, redneck birth-control should not be scorned - it was done by humans to humans til recently and still is in some parts of the world.

If the abuse of animals isn't for the above purpose then it can be a serious reflection on ourselves - if we're not doing it for science, food or clothes, why are we doing it?

Sadistic pleasure, I'd wager.

Back in the day of stag hunting, fox hunting and badger baiting it was all about sadism without doubt. In modern times when hare courseing was to end with the hare being protected the mask was removed when nobody was interested without the kill.
Now cock fighting is a different kittle of fish. You can judge a man by the lasting power of his cock. A man will invest a lot of time and money to ensure that his cock is the last cock standing at the end of a long day. The gentile ladies greatly admired the gentleman with the biggest, baddest meanest cock in town and this is where the term cuckudled came from.
Now the extermination of dogs is different again as it is solely reflects the economic necessity of a man protect his flock of sheep. His sheep are his liviehood and frequently a close bond developes between a man and his sheep. If they are violated by the neighbous dog then not only is his pocket hurt but his pride as well. The neighbour is likely to have fond feelings for his dog as well so when you nail him it is like mental emasculation.
