21 April 1916: Roger Casement with two companions landed at Banna Strand County Kerry from the German Submarine U19 where they are soon captured but initially unrecognised. They were taken to Tralee RIC barracks for questioning before being dispatched to Dublin.


21 April 1916: The Aud, (a.k.a. SMS Libau), under Captain Karl Spindler, after unsuccessful attempt at a rendezvous with the Irish, was stopped and detained by HMS Bluebell while attempting to leave Irish Coastal waters. She was ordered to proceed to Queenstown Harbour on suspicion of being an enemy vessel.

21 April 1918: An anti Conscription Pledge is taken throughout Ireland at Catholic Churches as opposition to the proposed measure gathered pace. The pledge was devised by De Valera at a Conference of Nationalist leaders in Dublin a few days earlier was to be taken that read: ‘Denying the right of the British Government to enforce compulsorily service in this Country, we pledge ourselves solemnly to one another to resist conscription by the most effective means at our disposal'.
