Amazingly, the Belgian Government which fell this weekend over the attempted sale of Fortis, Belgium's biggest bank to PNP Paribas at fire sale prices, is the first government to fall over the financial crisis.

Any bets on who will be next to go?

Iceland's Government seems to have survived by locking itself in.

It isn't that shocking that the Belgian Government has fallen... it would have fallen regardless of the financial crisis, just waiting for an excuse... they have been unable to form a functioning Government there for about 18 months at this stage just the King wouldn't let them have another election.

...bringing us on to all those questions of regionalism within the EU ...

To be fair, Belgium has been an interesting case for some time now...

still haven't fully caught up on Canada, which I always feel is a surrogate member of the EU ... the America we Europhiles like!!! ... Very Happy

Yvew Leterme says he wants nothing to do with a new government. He will be concentrating on clearing his name. You can't blame him really. The Courts intervening in the financial crisis and stopping the sale of a bank is a total mess. If people are not going to row in with you then there is no point in running a lame duck government.

Belgium seems to be a bit of a zombie country at the moment, yet the rubbish is not building up in the streets. A country functioning without a Government demonstrates perfectly the limited importance of democratically elected politicians.
