I was once at a theatre performance during which not only did the phone of a woman in front of me ring, but she answered it and conducted a full volume conversation.

It is generally frowned upon to use one's mobile phone when steering around sharp bends, at the moment of interment of one's near relations, or during a job interview.

Otherwise, are there any social restrictions that should be placed on use of the mobile phone?

When in Mass. It is so annoying to hear the ringing of phones during the celebration of Mass. It is quite rude, distracting and not at all consistent with the sacred atmosphere which we want to foster. Signal blockers are increasingly a preferable option.

Did you not tap her on the shoulder? I would have.

Mobile phones should not be used anywhere except in private, on the street and in the office in my opinion. I can't stick the damn things. I was once in a very nice restaurant with a woman shouting on a phone at the table next door. I asked the waiter to get me the restaurant manager who I then asked to kindly tell her to keep the noise down or take the phonecall outside because she was disrupting my meal and if it continued I wouldn't pay for it.

Japan has a form of mobile etiquette on public transport apparently. Phones are expected to be on vibrate/silent and when making a call, you are expected to whisper the conversation for the benefit of other passengers around you.

Hmm. Friend of mine answered hers at the altar at her wedding - handed me her bouquet and rootled around in her garter until she found it.

You know some very peculiar people. I can't remember the precise details of the last story you told us but it was about a wife running off on her husband I think? Is this the same couple?

I'm afraid not...similar levels of classiness, though.

I went down in the cinema once and asked someone to stop sending text messages because 1) the continuous beeping was annoying and 2) the backlight on it was distracting. I cannot stick people interferring with my enjoyment of something which I have paid for.

Clearly. It's perplexing why people decide to concentrate on their phones in the cinema. It's not like watching films there costs next to nothing. You have to pay at least a tenner for a ticket and with popcorn and drinks it costs easily twenty euro per person. At that price you'd want to focus on the film and get enjoyment out of it.
