Have you not tried Sharewatch? They are reputed to have the cheapest commissions on share trading in the land. As for the stock exchange, well mon dieu haven't been having a bad time? The ISEQ is on the floor at the moment and it doesn't look like an end is in sight. The massive falls in oil prices, falling interest rates and a weaker euro-dollar rate all help at the moment, but it looks like we're in for another 18 months at least of ructions before we can call a bottom to this fairly dramatic downturn.

Youngdan's prediction is coming true. We will have the last laugh on climate change though.

It's very interesting that it says that they say that the era of cheap oil is over when the price has plummeted by almost 70% since the Summer. In today's circumstances, it'll take quite a while to re-capture the highs of this Summer.

It seems like that. With the global recession, there should be no supply shortages over the next two years. The demand simply isn't there for the oil price to be in any way elevated.

Thanks for the welcome EVM, I don't know the ins and outs of trading with Sharewatch but I have been told they are the cheapest to use.

The DOW Ind is down at 7533. The flight out of shares continues.

On oil I am convinced it will shoot up once there is any sign of recovery. Apart from that supply is not reliable.

Which will be when, exactly? The end of next year? We've got a good bit of this global recession to get through yet, that should keep the oil prices falling.

As I said before if I decide to initiate a project now it will take at least 2 years before it starts to employ a reasonable number of people. Right now you would need to be Mystic Meg to know where to invest. I think it will be a lot clearer by early summer. We should know by then just how dire this is going to be. So assuming others have similar time spans, to wind the economies up again is going to take several years AFTER we have some idea where we are heading.

However by similar logic, if you want to have new energy supplies on tap for whenever the economy does turn around you need to be several years ahead of that again. It will take anything from 3-10 year depending on the energy source. One known is that we will need energy to fuel our economy. It is one of the certainties as is a need to feed an increasing world population.

EDIT

I would sooner see money poured into energy production than used to prop up some failing bank or blown on consumer spending. It would create a fair amount of employment and would be of lasting value.

Asia is opening around 2% down.

Suppose the sooner we get these declines out of the way and return to the boring the better.

At some stage shares are going to look like they have value and money will flow in. Will this reduce the money available to buy bonds and finance government borrowing?

The States is in a recession - worst since WWII according to Bloomberg. Thankfully it's still booming here.

According to Herald am...coldest autumn in 15 years. Why?? Sunspots, ocean currents, I think, are the current explanations for the slowdown in temp rise and are possibly temporary. However, if it keeps it up, I suspect demand for heating oil, gas, etc may be high this winter. Murphy's law, just when we all can't afford it!

The drop in energy prices is a long term disaster, the prices have dropped SO low that investment in alternatives is slowing dramatically....80bucks a barrel makes most alternatives viable...we're well below that now.

Deflation feels like being in a room with all the air being sucked out of it.

It won't be long but people won't be making decisions on trying out alternatives, they'll just stick with the oil because we'll believe there's so much in the ground it'll never run out.

It mightn't but I doubt it. One day in five years time we could wake up in a world of fans and flying brown stuff.
