25 December 1245: The terrible and unusual snow that had been falling in Ireland for the previous few weeks finally ended:

Poisonous
snow fell on the night of the festival of Saint Nicholas, [Dec.6]
which took off the heels and toes of those who walked
in it; and this snow did not disappear until Christmas
arrived.

25 December 1796: The Irish Patriot Wolfe Tone, lamented the fate of his Expedition to free Ireland from English rule on this day. As the winds off Cape Clear continued to prevent a landing from being attempted he wrote in his Journal:

December 25th: The wind continues right ahead, so that it is absolutely impossible to work up to the landing-place, and God knows when it will change. .... This day, at twelve, the wind blows a gale, still from the east, and our situation is now as critical as possible; for it is morally certain that this day or tomorrow on the morning the English fleet will be in the harbour's mouth, and then adieu to everything."
